Pricing guide

A practical foundation for project pricing.

A good freelance quote accounts for your time, direct costs, uncertainty, and the profit needed to keep your work sustainable.

01

Estimate the real work

Include planning, communication, revisions, administration, and delivery—not just production time.

02

Include direct costs

Materials, contractors, software, travel, and other project costs should be visible in your pricing.

03

Protect against uncertainty

Contingency is a planned allowance for reasonable unknowns, calculated from labor and direct expenses.

04

Use margin, not markup

A profit margin is a share of the selling price. To target 20%, divide cost by 0.80.

Questions

Freelance quote calculator FAQ

How does Tenterai calculate the recommended selling price?

It adds labor, expenses, and contingency to find total cost, then divides by one minus the desired margin. If a discount is used, the pre-discount price is increased so the discounted total still meets the target margin.

How are discounts handled?

The quotation's itemized lines add up to the pre-discount total. The discount is then subtracted to produce the final quotation total. This preserves the requested margin after discount.

What is the difference between profit margin and markup?

Markup is added to cost, while margin is calculated from the final selling price. This calculator uses profit margin.

Does changing currency convert my prices?

No. Currency selection only changes formatting and the currency symbol.

Is my data private?

Yes. Calculations happen in your browser. Saved details use local storage on this device.
